Far away, there exists a star named 'Pulse' where its people regard its lifestream as their 'Mother'. On this star, its people are distinguished by their role as their ultimate purpose in life, and there is no need for natural reproduction, its people having perfected the art of reproduction via incubation in pods. In the years leading up to its final days, famine, civil war, and pestilence ravaged its populace, causing their numbers to dwindle and the lifestream to grow weaker as its energy was sapped from Her roots. This momentous shift led to the Egress Foundation being established several decades before the star's ultimate demise, with its mission to find a cure for the population's dying Mother, with Cygnus among its fleet of astronauts leading the effort.
   After several decades of drifting, Cygnus's spacecraft runs out of fuel, leading him to incubate himself in a hibernation pod, drifting through space until his spacecraft eventually gets caught in Etheirys' orbit, crash-landing with his craft in critical condition. On this new star, lost and alone, he finds that he cannot manipulate its lifestream, and his drone companions are no longer functional. He is discovered near his crash site by a young, four year-old child named Elena, who takes him home and introduces him to her mother Rose, who eventually agrees to take him in to her own dismay.
